Dexter

We met Dexter when we picked up several adult dogs and puppies to sterilize from the home of a poor, very aged and somewhat senile woman who lives with far too many animals. Most of the animals were in reasonably good shape, with the exception of little Dexter, who was malnourished and had severe rickets. The woman has no yard and no sunlight in her home, so Tessa took Dexter home to recover.

Here is how Dexter was when we met him:

Dexter recovered from his initial rickets and weakness and  was doing well when he developed an infection in his beautiful, clear blue eye. Despite prompt veterinary care, he sadly lost the eye. During this time, we also realized that Dexter was deaf!

Despite all his myriad issues, Dexter is the happiest, sunniest, sweetest little pup every. He LUVS his people. And he considers everyone to be his people! He is playful and silly and very connected. He really has no idea that he is any different than his puppy buddies.

We are training Dexter using hand signals as a marker, and food as a reinforcer. He is learning fast and loves to play our training games. This little pup is extra special and we’ll be looking for an extra special home for him in a month or so.

We are a small organization dedicated to helping dogs and cats in Antigua. We sterilize, rehabilite and find homes, and work with other rescue groups.
